Advocate staff photo by SCOTT THRELKELD — The Rev. Harry Jenkins administers ashes to Nicole Blaize Wednesday, March 5, 2014, in front of Christ Episcopal Church in Slidell. This is the second year Rev. Jenkins has participated in Ashes to Go, a new approach to a centuries-old Christian tradition to begin Lent by being marked in ash with the sign of the cross as a sign of penitence. The program is part of a nationwide movement that has clergy and lay people visiting street corners, coffee shops and wherever people gather to take the ashes to them.
