This is the former Grace Church on Canal Street in the Mid-City neighborhood of New Orleans. It will soon become the new home of the Diocesan Center. Grace Church sustained serious damage during Hurricane Katrina. We look forward to bringing the building back to life and creating an Episcopal presence once again in the neighborhood.
The church was constructed in 1953 and designed by architect August Perez, Jr. It is a fine example of mid-century modern architecture in New Orleans. The naive features stained glass windows designed by the architect and created by Payne & Company. The murals were designed by John McCrady. McCrady painted the Communion Mural behind the altar in the mid 1950’s. The Ascension Mural was painted in 1973 by Allen Flattman, a student of McCrady using McCrady’s sketch.
